Working in different school communities around the US allows me to see the benefits of schools giving parents a clear directive of what their involvement means by stating clear objectives with well-defined expectations.
Objective:
~ Teach parents HOW to Conversationally Read with their children
~ Make sure parents understand how Conversational Reading will help their child acquire the strong literacy skills they need to become proficient and good readers.
Conversational Reading is a reading comprehension strategy that makes reading an interactive experience by encouraging children at all levels to read deeply, ask essential questions and make connections. These are skills children need to become good readers. The benefit of parents CR in the home reinforces classroom practices, and makes for a stronger and more effective learning environment for children.
I believe The Common Core Standards poses an opportunity to educate parents on what they can do in the home that supports their child’s work in the classroom. Conversational Reading encourages children at all levels to read for meaning, showing them how to analyze critically, hypothesize with confidence, clarify with purpose and to make inferences that matter. These skills further the goals of the Common Core Standards.
